I quieted my mind a la George DeWolfe when I was photographing fallen leaves in a pond in Backus Woods this autumn. It was in this mindful state that I noticed how the leaves under the water were richly coloured when the "V" shaped shadow of a large tree fell onto the pond. The lighter toned triangular area reflects the overcast sky and surrounding bare trees and branches. In other words, the viewer is "seeing through" the water to the submerged leaves but also seeing the sky and overhead trees mirrored on the water's surface. Complex, but simple.
