CYCLIST AND SHADOW - NYC

photograph by larry monczka
We were staying in a hotel near Chinatown in Manhattan this past August which, by chance, had floor to ceiling windows facing Hester Street. Glancing out of our tinted glass aerie early one morning, I noticed that the rising sun cast long shadows on the pavement down below, which was covered with mysterious glyphs due to ongoing road work. Over the course of a few sunny mornings, I would stumble out of bed at dawn and photograph the street action as it passed by, from our air conditioned vantage point on the ninth floor. This scenario happened in a flash, but I was ready thanks to hours of patient attention.
