This image happened because I decided to crawl onto the clear ice of a newly frozen vernal pond. Looking down through the ice to the submerged leaves and trapped air bubbles a few inches below, I saw a mysterious world that was not visible from land. The thrill of that discovery makes this photograph special for me.
