Snapping turtles are commonly found on land in early summer when the females leave the safety of the water to lay their eggs. Because they are too large to fully withdraw their soft parts into their shell, they have evolved very long, flexible necks and strong jaws to protect themselves. This large speciman has aquatic vegetation growing on its shell.
