H/S WEEK #16

KP (left) Atalaya, the former home of Anna and Archer Huntington, was designed in the style of a Moorish fortification. Built during the 1930's, the empty structure remains under the care of Huntington State Park, south of Myrtle Beach. This photograph, with it's intentional distortion, conveys the slight unease I felt while visiting the melancholy corridors.
LM (right) Alligators have cleared a muddy opening through the dense undergrowth of Atalaya where they habitually slither across the road from one body of water to another. Taking advantage of this access, I noticed a mix of pond scum and fallen leaves. Although far from an iconic subject, the swirl of detritus formed a naturally sensuous pattern that caught my eye.
