H/S WEEK #18

KP (upper photograph) It was only when we came to the end of the boardwalk, arriving at the beach, that we realized this evening's last light was exquisitely pastel. In later discussion we found that we had taken somewhat different approaches in trying to capture the gentle tones of the scene before us. I panned the camera creating an edgeless wash of soft colour while Larry and his camera were stationary, allowing the moving water to create it's own "watercolour" effect.
LM (lower photograph) Wading out into the surf with camera on tripod was essential for this image because I needed to immerse myself inthe feel and sound of the waves in order to "play" with the rhythms of the foam. Using a variable neutral density filter to extend the length of my shutter speed, I continually changed aperture and timing as the waves moved in, out and around me. It was a hypnotic and exhilarating experience.
