DRIFT - LONG POINT

Long Point Beach constantly surprises us, living up to its designated title of "dynamic" beach. We particularly love it in bad weather and in the off-season when we're often the only people in evidence. This day was particularly difficult, with high waves, strong winds and sand blasting us. The cottagers, in a vain attempt to hold back the sand, annually erect barriers of plywood. Here the dry, loose, blowing sand has piled up against the fence while the damp dune has been stripped bare, revealing variegated oxides. I like the paradoxical calm of this image that belies the violence of the conditions. I was also most delighted to discover the wood's grain echoed in the sand pattern of the dune.
